Keep Cleaning
|

I saw this in a toilet at Woodlands Civics Centre. Different Chinese and English meanings huh?
Jolene
The English Language Panel comments:
Hey Jolene!
We can't believe this sign is still in use! It can't possibly be the same sign from like, 2 or 3 years ago!
Of course, by now everyone knows that it should just read 'please keep clean'. At least, that is what we hope.

A word about 'word'
|
|
Why do some of my friends keep saying 'word' after something I say? Is there a particular slang or phrase that I am missing here?
It would help if you could explain.
Thank you
Shawnna Chua
Hey Shawnna Chua!
We contemplated answering this question using ebonics but wisely decided against it.
Your friends are using 'word' as a slang phrase that can mean 'well said' or that can be used as a sign of agreement.
This use most probably originated from America among the African-Americans. I don't blame you if you don't know this meaning of the word, Shawnna. Should we blame your friends instead for not explaining it to you? Word.

Saying Deutsche Bank
|
|
I know this is English as it is Broken, but what is the proper pronunciation of 'Deutsche bank'?
Thanks,
Alina123
Hey Alina123!
Well, we know it isn't exactly English, but 'Deutsche Bank' is prominent enough to warrant that most of us know how to pronounce it. The right way to pronounce it is 'Doy-chuh'!

'Then' versus 'than'
|
|
What is the difference between 'than' and 'then'?
Ann M
Hey Ann M!
Ah, these words really get people confused, don't they!
'Than' is used as a conjunction or a preposition. A conjunction is a word you use to connect clauses. A preposition is a word you use to show a relationship between two things.

Hilarious Shenzhen sign
|

I saw this sign in China and I couldn't stop laughing!
Thanks,
A STOMPer
The English Language Panel comments:
Hey A STOMPer!
You're not the same guy who sent in the last hot springs sign, are you? How lucky you are to be holidaying in China.
It's another of those mind-boggling signs, dear STOMPer. I think it'd be best to just say 'Please report any touts to the management'.
The other alternative is to just concentrate on shopping.
